hagel. i think he'd be a good secretary of defense, but the performance yesterday was panned by people on all sides of the political spectrum. >> as claire mccaskill told me yesterday, she said, look. he is more used to asking questions than answering questions. there were a lot of issues. and what didn't help, of course, is that his former good friend, john mccain, just eviscerated him, grilled him, didn't give him a chance. yes or no. give me an answer. were you correct or incorrect? i mean, there is a way to try to do that, but clearly he came with a very hostile attitude. and it was very painful to watch. >> yeah. awkward at times. >> i mean, john mccain, mika, didn't let him answer a question. i'm sorry, out of that exchange, it was not chuck hagel who looked bad. >> ted cruz looked even worse. >> yeah. >> oh, my god. >> we're going to show all those coming up. >> he wasn't prepared, mika, in a lot of ways that were concerning. i think, again, the democrats, republicans, independents alike, if the republicans party thinks badgering an ill-prepared witness that way is going to help

hagel into the defense post he's nominated for in president obama's cabinet and yesterday they left town for nine days. joining me now jake sherman, congressional reporter, molly bald, national political reporter at "the atlantic." molly, today's "new york times" california democrat barbara boxer likened the block that republicans like texas senator ted cruz have put on chuck hagel to mccarthyism. what was the point of prolonging this hagel vote until after everyone reconvenes? >> well, i think that republicans started out with some legitimate questions about this, and they would say they're just trying to get those answered and need more time. it was harry reid who called this vote as sort of an attempt to call their bluff saying this is enough, you're delaying this for no reason but i don't think this is going to help the republicans' image especially when they're going around saying we're not actually trying to stop this nomination. we're not actually filibustering, so what are they doing? i think especially for people who are sick of the sort of washington games, this isn't a good im
. >> this is a clip from chuck hagel's hearing yesterday. listen to senator james inhofe's source for his information. >> there is an article the other day in the "washington post" by jennifer rubin called "our dim witted state department." it's kind of an interesting article. >> michael, how do you get these guys to stop listening to the same wild conspiracy theories? they just live in a different world. >> i think it is a little bit of a different world in that sense. i don't get -- i don't get the direction and the messaging that the party is putting out this right now. i really honestly don't. i think that we really need to sort of step back from this thing and really assess exactly what do we need to focus on. is benghazi of all the things that are pressing the american people right now something that as a national party we should be fixated on. hillary clinton, yes, she served as secretary of state. did an admiral job. most people would say that. yeah, there was this hiccup with benghazi. we unfortunately lost the lives of four u.s. servicemen out there, ambassador and the like. so how do we no
. the president's nominee to be defense secretary, former republican secretary chuck hagel was confirmed today, and will be sworn in and take over at that time pentagon. chuck hagel had the majority support, all the republicans in the senate, and the majority. it took this long to get him confirmed because republicans filibustered his nomination. nobody has ever done that before. nobody has ever before used a filibuster to block the confirmation of a cabinet nominee, ever in the history of our country, but they did it to chuck hagel. why? who knows? republicans in the senate pulled the fire alarm on this one, they broke glass in case of emergency. they did something that has never been done before in the history of the republic. and because they did it, there is now precedent for them to filibuster the next nominee. they broke glass for a nominee who in his case had bipartisan support to be confirmed. and the republicans in the senate did it in a way that didn't actually stop the confirmation. so you won nothing. but you did further break the institution where you work. there is an effort alre
hearing, the chances of chuck hagel becoming secretary of defense are greater than 24 hours ago because john mccain and three other colleagues of his indicated they would oppose the use of a filibuster to try to block the nomination, rejecting an idea floated over the weekend by senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and others. move by mccain and others now suggest hagel is going to have enough support to be confirm. the nomination is expected to go to the full senate floor this thursday. >>> last night in the book touring supreme court justice sonia sotomayor made a rare television appearance. she was on the colbert report. she talked about her childhood in the bronx, faith in the constitution, but she got a little bit coy when stephen tried to draw her into specifics. >> not all of us believe in the constitution. the second amendment is never to be questioned. do you believe that we have the right to have any weapon we want? >> well, you'll find out soon enough when the case comes up. >> this is what i like. this is what i like. >> all right. stick around. we're going to take a quick
in benghazi. >> i don't think we should allow brennan to go forward for the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed as secretary of defense until the white house gives us an accounting, did the president ever pick up the phone and call anyone in the libyan government to help these folks? what did the president do? yes, i'm going to ask my colleagues just like they did with john bolton, joe biden said, no confirmation without information. no confirmation without information. >> you are saying that you are going to block the nominations -- you're going to block them from coming to a vote until you get an answer? >> yes. >> now, john mccain has already think that he doesn't think republicans ought to filibuster this. what will you do? you're just going to put a hold on it? >> yeah, i'm not filibustering. this is a national security failure of monumental proportions, and i'm not going to stop until we get to the bottom of it. >> first of all, i'm shocked. you know, lindsey graham doesn't usually like getting in front of a camera and going on the sunday talk shows. so i'm shocked that li

his remarks on benghazi. do you think hagel's confirmation will go ahead more swiftly that leon panetta has been there to testify? >> one of the requests made by a number of republicans was for a hearing on benghazi. there's a legitimate and urgent concern about protecting our state department personnel, public servants abroad. i recently returned from a trip with senators mccain and graham and others, bipartisan trip, and we saw very directly the potential threats to our state department and other personnel. so i think there is an effort and it's articulated and reflected in today's hearing that this kind of review precede the confirmation of senator hagel. i believe he will be confirmed. that vote will probably be next week in the senate armed services committee where i serve, and i think that there has been little shifting of democratic support and obviously a statement by senator mccain that he would not filibuster it. so i think the chances are very high he will be confirmed. >> one thing that's been pointed to me is general dempsey will acknowledge that the u.s. military d
